Local History Schuylerville, formerly known as "Saratoga" long before the city of Saratoga Springs adopted the name, was renamed after General Philip Schuyler, a Revolutionary War general who kept a summer home, lumber mill, and farm in the village. Today, Schuylerville is often referred to as "Old Saratoga" in order to draw awareness to the village's powerful historical role in the forging of this nation. The battles which took place in and around the village are chronicled as the turning point in the American revolution. In fact, Fort Hardy, a former French and Indian War fortress which sat on the banks of the Hudson River and Fish Creek in "Old Saratoga", is known as the "Field of Ground Arms" as General Burgoyne's troops surrendered their weapons there in 1777 after their defeat in the Revolutionary War. |
